Caprica Six doesn't realise that her dress is a little too revealingWell season 2 of Battlestar Galactica has been absolutely awesome. It took the storylines in to new areas, developed the characters and genuinely surpassed any thoughts of it being a remake. The original pales in to comparison now. Never afraid to send the story in unexpected directions, the finale really takes this to an extreme by offering a haven to the weary travellers: New Caprica. Nestles in the heart of a cloaking nebula, this unoccupied offers a place to start again for many of the colonists, and scheming Baltar seizes this as an opportunity to win the presidency. When Roslin fixes the election, it is left to Adama to stand for democracy, and so Baltar is elected president and orders that the fleet settle on New Caprica.

Suddenly we see the timeline move forward a year, where New Caprica is not quite the paradise everyone had hoped for, most of Galactica’s crew has moved planetside, including Starbuck and Sam, are struggling to make a life on the unforgiving planet, whilst Baltar enjoys the perks of Presidency, apparently ignoring the needs of the citizens.

Adama orders a pizzaUntil, that is, that the Cyclon fleet appears in orbit, forcing the undermanned orbital fleet to flee and regroup, leaving the planet’s occupants, lead by Baltar, to surrender to the Cylons, led by Caprica Six and Sharon Valerii. A very strange ending to a cool series - taking the show in a completely different direction, and leaving it on a mega cliffhanger. Personally I didn’t like the direction that the finale took. Sure it keeps it fresh, but some things didn’t make sense. Surely if you were making a concerted effort to settle on the planet, then you would dismantle many of the ships in the fleet to build a more substantial settlement than the tents that they all seemed to be living in? Most of the fleet seemed intact when they jumped.

What are the Cylons going to do? Didnt the Caprica Heroes want peace? So why are they chasing the colonists? What’s going to happen to Sharon’s baby? And will Dean Stockwell be back? All these questions and more will no doubt be answered when the show returns in October. Sigh…

Still, at least Lost is back on channel 4 soon.
