Just finished Matthew Reilly’s Hover Car Racer. This is a bit of a departure from his previous novels, and is aimed at a younger audience. Set in the future, the car has been replaced by the hover car, and formula 1 has evolved to being hover cars with jet engines attached, and the book reads a little like Phantom Menace Vs Wipeout Vs Harry Potter, as we follow Jason Chaser, a 14 year old racing prodigy through racing school and in his quest for a professional contract. In tow is his younger brother, The Bug, who is a maths genius, and hence makes a great navigator.

In typical Reilly fashion, this book moves at a startling pace, descriptive text is kept to a minimum, the plot moving as fast as the hover cars, our character’s development is effectively told in his behaviour in a series of increasingly difficult races. Originally published free on the interweb in serial form (at http://www.hovercarracer.com), it’s a fun read, with a few nice twists and turns, although I did find it a bit predictable, but then I don’t think it’s aimed at my age. Still, it’s an entertaining read. The movie rights have been snapped up by Disney Pictures, so expect to see it on the big screen in a couple of years. And spurred on by this, a sequel book is in the works.

Matthew Reilly's Hell Island

Been looking to see if I can get a copy of Reilly’s new Seven Ancient Wonders, which is only out on Oz, but at £30 to import I’ve decided to wait until Feb, mean I’ll have to try again on Richard Morgan’s Woken Furies. After the lack of maghook action in Hell Island however, I could do with another Scarecrow novel.

After the abysmal movie that was the original Dungeons & Dragons, who would have thought that it would ever get a sequel? With an army of fanatical D&D players and fans waiting for their vision to finally make it to the big screen, the original movie, Courtney Solomon’s vision in the original movie was just another fantasy adventure, rather than digging in to the rich and expansive world of the D&D game. Apart from a rather neat dragon battle at the end, the film sucked big time.

And so that was the end of the franchise before it started. Until, that is, the SciFi channel, resurrected it in the form of a made for TV movie… (more…)

Well I’ve finished Matthew Reilly’s Hell Island novella, for 100 pages it’s rip-roaring Scarecrow action, but not an Armalite MH12 Maghook in sight, I kid you not!! It’s not even mentioned, not once! I guess in 100 pages it would pretty much suck if he got out of one of the two main scrapes using his favourite toy. It did, however get my appetite up for his new one and I’ve started on Hover Car Racer, which I hadn’t got round to reading before. The novella was produced for the Australian Government sponsored “Books Alive” programme, to encourage more reading in Australia (Reilly’s home). It also includes a few pages from his forthcoming Seven Ancient Wonders (due in January in the UK, and called 7 Deady Wonders in the US because clever words like Ancient and Philosopher don’t appeal to thickie Americans), which looks to be another riproaring affair with a new protagonist, Jack West Jnr, apparently no relation to Fred and Rose, or John’s tuna. One thing that interested me with Hell Island is how easily a novella can become a novel. Here, the story thunders to a conclusion through some prior knowledge on the part of Scarecrow. However Reilly could have removed this knowledge and brought the information to light through additional plot segments, perhaps finding some old maps or exploring the island further. Perhaps this novella was originally going to be Scarecrow IV, and maybe the story has been sat on Reilly’s PC for some time? This is worth bearing in mind for budding writers - no idea should be binned, simply put it somewhere on your computer (or blog?) for future use and one day you will probably find a use or place for it.It would also appear that Matthew Reilly is as big a fan of Joss Whedon and Serenity as I am. Looking forward to that one on DVD I am.
